Acne And Pregnancy – What Treatment Is Best? What Treatment Is Safest?
Acne is more likely to occur during special periods of a person’s life. The reason for this is that hormonal changes or hormonal surges can cause the extra production of skin oil. When this oil clogs the skin’s pores it can result in a bacterial infection which causes acne. The two most common life experiences which cause these hormonal surges are puberty and pregnancy. A more detailed discussion of acne pregnancy can be found at: ACNE PREGNANCY ISSUES.
YOU MAY NOT NEED TREATMENT
If you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, you may find that acne will tend to flare up during the first trimester. The good news is that this condition usually clears up on its own after the first trimester. However, if it does not clear up on its own, or if you want to get rid of pregnancy acne entirely, there are certain treatments available.
First, there is preventive action, consisting of cleanliness and a healthy lifestyle. This includes drinking lots of water to keep your skin hydrated, eating lots of fruits and vegetables which contain anti-inflammatory agents such as citric acid, and washing twice a day with a gentle, oil-free facial cleanser like Dial soap or Neutrogena. This regimen controls or clears the production of skin oils and discourages pregnancy acne.
AVOID ACCUTANE
If acne flares up or persists, AVOID AT ALL COSTS taking any internal medication that contains the ingredient isotretenoin, such as Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis or Sotret. This can cause birth defects or genetic damage to the fetus. Instead, you should consult your dermatologist or obstetrician. It is generally accepted that the best oral acne treatment during pregnancy is to take oral erythromycin, provided it is prescribed by your doctor. Although you should always notify your doctor first, another safe treatment that does not need a doctor’s prescription and will treat your acne from the inside out can be found by clicking here: SAFE ACNE TREATMENT.
LOOK FOR BENZOYL PEROXIDE
Topical acne treatments – treatments that are applied directly to the affected area – are generally safer than oral medications if you are pregnant. Even so you should avoid any topical products that contain salicylic acid, like Stridex or Propa pH, and look for products that contain benzoyl peroxide instead, as this is considered safe for the fetus.
